That's the claim made by PhoneGnome, the brainchild of David Beckemeyer, the former CTO and co-founder of Earthlink. Most VoIP lovers have heard of the device that marries your landline with your VoIP, but if you are not familiar, Om Malik wrote an introduction to PhoneGnome a while back that serves as a good place to familiarize yourself with the teeny-tiny little box.

We got an early heads-up that in November, PhoneGnome will introduce SoftGnome, their latest cool telephony offering. In fact, a whois search reveals the domain softgnome.com is owned by the company, so I assume this will be domain for softgnome.

From what I understand, the service would allow you to:

* make calls from multiple locales w/o your home caller ID changing, no matter where you are (sweet)
* receive incoming home calls while you are away from home (yes)
* make calls and receive calls from home while continuing to keep that capability with your landline as the same time (hello!)
* integrate the included software on the PC with the landline and VoIP service (ie receive your landline or home phone calls on your PC)

And they had me at the caller ID permanence.

Innovation at its finest...

If you have PhoneGnome you'll be able to try out the service for free. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it if you're beta testing it, or if you know anything more about it.
