High Quality Skype Video On the Mac?

Skype_Video_with_Dan_York.jpg

In yesterday's post about Skype's High Quality Video, Dan York posted a comment saying it was possible to enable the high-Quality video support in the Mac version. I was able to find this relatively simple change that needs to be made documented on the Skype Developer Zone.

Guess what? Didn't work. Both Dan and I are MacBook users using a relatively recent beta copy of Skype (2.7.0.49). All we were able to manage to get was the standard 320×240 resolution. The video quality was okay, though I did notice periods of blockiness as well as the audio and video getting out of sync.

I am going to test the high quality quality video on a Windows XP machine. The Skype PR folks contacted me and are sending me a "supported" Logitech camera for my testing purposes. I plan on doing a comparison with SightSpeed using like conditions.

Just started using Skype – iSight Mac to a PC Skype user. First response I get from the PC user is about the mosaic on my face. As your image depicts, crystal clear video on the Mac, pixelated on the PC. I am extremely disappointed with Skype. I was ready to urge more people to Skype. Cannot understand why Skype would slight Mac users. We should be so grateful for mediocre quality because it’s free? I tried the Skype – provided “fix” and it didn’t work for me either. I think AOL/AIM video works Mac< -> PC.

According to the Skype site, “You need version 2.5.0.85 or newer…” to enable high quality video. You guys seem to be using an older version.
