I remember when I was kid that making a long distance call was a big deal. Why? Because it was expensive. Want an example? Here's an AT&T ad from 1984:
$10 an hour for a weekend or evening state-to-state long distance calling? You mean in-state calls are more expensive? Yes, my friends, that was the case-and still is today on some long distance plans.
How about the ad from 1986 that proclaims 64 cents a minute calling to the UK?
Two decades later, thanks to the Internet and worldwide deregulation in telephony, calls from the United States to the UK-and a lot of other places-are as cheap as calling inside the United States.

$10 an hour is still very cheap compared to what cell phone call cost in most of the world(including developed nations in europe) the dramatic drop in cost has been limited mostly to landline calls in select countries.
actually if you count actual minutes used I suspect most americans pay more than $10/hour for cell phone service. after all the regulatory and hidden fees are added on most people pay close to $60/month for service. how many talk over 6 hours on there cells with a basic plan and never pay any overages?
Mobile telephony is different from fixed line telephony in this regard for sure.
wow $10 an hour, I bet AT&T are missing those days!
