On the 12th of April something terrible happened at NASA, the new VoIP system at their Washington D.C. headquarters shut down and a number of their employees were forced to fall back upon their personal mobile phones and PDAs.
This glitch happened at around 1.30 pm on that day which disabled the phone system and all computers networking for a number of hours. Although the network connectivity was reinstated by 3 pm, the VoIP service could only be reinstated by 7.30 pm.
As per the internal memo circulated by NASA, this happened when a contracted technician unknowingly deleted the entire NASA Headquarters VoIP user database while adding 19 new VoIP user accounts to the system. Despite a safety net being built into the system and a warning question appearing advising against the action, the technician answered the question incorrectly.
The VoIP project which started at NASA's headquarter in January is expected to be finished sometime during this month. NASA is now undertaking appropriate safety measures in order to avoid any future malfunctions and reduce the recovery time.
