Indians to Taste VoIP with Yahoo
Filed in archive Companies by gautam on November 8, 2006

are growing by leaps and bounds in this country. The latest data states that there are around 37 million online users in India and this number is expected to only move north. Another thing which needs to be taken into account is that the number of active internet users has reached the figures of 25 million in September which is 3.9 million more as compared to the figures of month of March this year. These might just be figures for you but Yahoo has sensed a business opportunity out here and it is has got the permission from the Indian government for offering VoIP services to its Indian users. For this purpose Yahoo has floated a new company called Yahoo Internet Communication India. The company is also trying to meet the local tastes and it was only last month that the company launched plug-ins which enables users to chat in major Indian languages with Yahoo Messenger.
What brings Yahoo to India is the fact that as a large number of Indians work abroad it presents a revenue generating opportunity for the company through its VoIP services. Yahoo has gained an early advantage over AOL which is also planning to come up with web based services in India.
Expect the competition to heat up in India in the coming months as most of the markets have reached the saturation level and companies would certainly make efforts to exploit this new opportunity.
