Today, we find two conflicting opinions on the subject. First, Om Malik suggests that SunRocket is down for the count. However, Vinay over at VoIPGuides posits a more optimistic view.
I think pretty much all standalone voip providers have a pretty bleak future. That isn't to say they are all going to go away. Smaller providers who serve a particular niche very well will continue to survive and thrive. Those whom are simply trying to replace your standard dial tone without providing any other benefits are destined to fail.

I just called the sunrocket customer service line, because I just began having issues with making outbound calls. I get a dial tone, but no connection after the number is dialed. I have to redial 2 to 3 times to get through. When I called the Customer service line, a recording states that no customer service calls are being accepted. What????

Not surprising, since there are wide reports out now that they are shutting down. They laid off all their customer service people (or the remaining ones, anyway) on Monday. They did not say what this would mean for existing customers.

I should have seen it...stand alone voip aren't that ripe yet, the technology is there but it isn't just ripe yet to replace your regular land line. Now I am without a telephone service and missing very important business opportunities.
I am currently looking at Onesuite.com VOIP feature, (Onesuite by the way is a prepaid long distance service with voip feature) and it looks like their "pay-as-you-go" plan or should I say no plan is the way to go.
I'm still looking at other providers but I'm done with stand alone VOIP's.
