Is VoIP Call Quality Getting Poorer?

We are very much aware of the fact that the call quality of VoIP service is not as good as the traditional phones but a new study has gone ahead and suggested that the voice quality of VoIP service is getting poorer.

As per the data gathered from TestYourVoip.com it was found that the call quality of VoIP had shot down by around five percent in the past Eighteen months. Around one million VoIP connections were tested through this site and it was found out that twenty percent of the calls delivered unacceptable quality which was up from fifteen percent a few years ago.

Brix Networks which analyzed the data attributed this to increasing competition for resources on the same IP network as other services such as music downloads, video and interactive gaming. Since IP calls are delivered over the same network which delivers internet and with the increased usage of internet therefore the call quality has suffered.

A number of internet companies are against the phone companies prioritizing traffic for improving call quality as they believe that network operators might abuse their power by charging high fees and squeeze out competing traffic. Analysts are predicting that the time has come when operators would have to prioritize delay sensitive traffic such as video or voice.

I wondered whether it was right on the part of the company to have gone ahead and attributed the poor call quality to congested network while there could be end number of reasons for this. There could be other network problems or that the people facing problems with VoIP might have become aware of TestYourVoip site. I am not trying to defend VoIP but until and unless it is backed by thorough evidence it would be wrong to put the blame on congested network.
