Mobivox Gets 11 Million in Series A Funding

Mobivox is something I played with a long time ago. The basic idea behind it is fairly simple: You call a telephone number, which then allows you to make calls by simply speaking the person's name. If the calls can be made over Skype or it's to another Mobivox user, it's free. Otherwise, you pay nominal rates to connect the call. It also has other features as well, which are detailed by TechTraveler.

Let me say it a different way: Mobivox makes Skype available on any phone. Doesn't matter if it's a high-end Nokia device or a free-with-two-year-contract model. Or even your landline. You call a local number and you're into the Skype cloud, or at least the "cheaper long distance" cloud. That is an accomplishment.

I had actually forgotten about Mobivox until I had come across Alec Saunders piece on Mobivox getting $11 million in Series B funding. That's a pretty serious chunk of change, particularly for a Canadian startup, which seem to get less attention by the venture capitalists.

Give Mobivox a try and let me know what you think!
