Since the e911 deadline passed at midnight yesterday (just a few hours ago), things have changed a bit for VoIP carriers.
1. Numbers Filings
The FCC caved to industry pressure and removed the mandate to cut off service to customers where enhanced 911 isn't offered, but they do have to file a letter with the numbers on how many of their customers can receive e911 service.
2. Rural Restrictions
VoIP carriers are expected to cease marketing to all areas that cannot receive e911, even if they can receive traditional 911 and could retain that line. So, millions of people (CNet says 98 million) are effectually denied VoIP service, unless this changes.
I just don't see how this is 'helpful' at all to consumers. All I see, as an admittedly jaded political watcher, is an FCC that appears to be looking out for the landline operators.
