Real VoIP? Is There Fake VoIP Out There?

Marcelo Rodriguez over at RingFree took issue with a number of other product announcements that use a phrase similar to "True VoIP for the iPhone."

Like Marcelo, I think people are hung up on having the leg from your telephone go over an IP network. There are times when there is value in doing that, for instance, you have a WiFi-enabled mobile and you're in a foreign country and don't want to pay the insane roaming charges you're likely to pay by using GSM. However, I don't think this kind of setup is a requirement for "true VoIP" be it on the iPhone or any other handset.

In the case of RF dialer and several other examples I can think of, VoIP happens inside the network so to speak. It doesn't make it any less "VoIP" in my mind as it enables additional functionality and/or lower cost calls through voice over IP technologies.

For you VoIP "purists" out there, go ahead and have your "pure VoIP" calls with other like-minded geeks. Meanwhile, the rest of us will communicate with our "fake" VoIP solutions with the rest of the world.

what i have learned over the past many years is that to the vast majority the allure of VOIP is all about a way to call regular phones cheaper. very few people seem top have any interest in using a new method of voice communications( such as calling SIP URI in place of phone numbers). the is strictly for us geeks. for the rest it is to have as near a duplication of traditional phone service as possible. ideally the only difference is in the monthly expense.

Anything that changes the interface TOO much will be a huge turnoff to 90% of the world, you’re right.

Relax guys. VoIP is just a passing fad. Copper will be the guts of our telephone system for another 50 years at least.

    Cheers
