Being a curious lad, I decided to give the video-enabled Skype on Linux a try. The problem is, most of my native Linux machines aren't exactly current machines. I did the next best thing: ran Ubuntu under VMware on my beefy machines. ;)
No dice. I tried using an Ubuntu image on VMware Fusion on my Mac. It recognizes the camera, but can't use it. The same thing happens when I try a Logitech Quickcam for Notebooks Pro under a different VMware image on a Windows box. Neither worked. What was worse: if I tried to send either instance video from my Mac or from Windows, I got no video in Linux.
Turns out, there's a known bug in Ubuntu that's breaking things for the iSight. Not sure what's happening with the Logitech camera.
This is why they call it beta software, right?
