Skype Wings Clipped In China

Skype Wings Clipped In China

This is what you can expect in a communist country like China. Skype was climbing popularity charts in China but its wings have been clipped and is now available only in a few areas in country. It has been a victim of strict censorship laws of the country and now cannot offer its call to landline service as China wants to maintain its monopoly in the telecom sector.

You all must be aware that China along with U.S and Germany is one of the biggest markets for Skype in terms of active users of its free telephony service and this is certainly a rude shock for the company.

On the other hand Mr. Wei, spokesperson for Tom which is responsible for offering Skype in China states:

We are not worried, the current customer profile is quite good, and having many Skype users around the world also helps to attract domestic users.

Around 100,000 people register for Skype everyday through Tom and now it needs to be seen how much affect this partial ban would have on the popularity of Skype in the country. I hope it doesn't but what kind of an image China is trying to create with such actions.
