Tom Keating uncovered a new release of the app Talkonaut, which was originally designed as a J2ME application that provided VoIP calling and multi-network IM capabilities. Now they have added a new native Symbian app that works on a number of Nokia handsets.
I did see a couple of interesting features, the most interesting one being that the application will run over a WAP or limited GPRS connection. Calls that touch the PSTN, either because you use a non-VoIP capable handset or because you are calling a PSTN number, the call will go through the GTalk-to-VoIP service.
I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how this solves a problem differently than Gizmo5, EQO, or any number of other services. Anyone try this application care to comment?

With Talkonaut you can use your own VoIP provider of choice. Gizmo5, EQO and the like mostly have good pricing for the US, but the Talkonaut comes from Tyumen in Siberia (Russia). People in other parts of the world want to use other VoIP providers with better local prices. With Talkonaut they can.
talkanaut is not so much about just cheap voice calling as it is about bringing a full gtalk like client to your mobile with chat, presence and also voice.
I didn’t quite get that from reading the Talkonaut website, Markus. Seemed a bit lost in the other features the client had.
Why exactly would I want gtalk on my mobile phone? I barely use it on my desktop.
