Tough Times for Vonage

Vonage had a rough Q4 2008 - although revenue increased by 3 percent, the company's net loss increased to $41 million, and subscriber numbers decreased by 14,700.

"Wait, wasn't VoIP supposed the change the world and cripple the Bells?" asks AllThingsD's Eric Savitz. "Well, it certainly has made a dent, but the damage is being done largely by the cable companies, rather than Vonage."

"Vonage has long been the leading indicator of the health of the standalone Internet VoIP industry," writes VoIP News' Robert Poe. "Analysts and pundits have repeatedly predicted its demise in the face of increasingly fierce competition from cable companies' telephony services."

"It's going to be very hard to significantly grow Vonage's customer base with its current business model - given the shift to wireless and rapid growth of service bundles (including mobile phone service) from cable and telco giants," warns Silicon Alley Insider's Dan Frommer.
