Truphone has announced a new VoIP app that turns the iPad into a Wi-Fi phone.
"The Truphone app on the iPhone allows you to make VoIP calls over wireless networks — the iPad version has similar functionality, although due to the larger screen the iPad offers, the new iPad version of Truphone shows more details on screen relating to your call," writes Alicia at Gadget Venue.
"With Truphone you can make calls to other Truphone and Google Talk users over Wi-Fi and also place international calls to mobile phones and landlines for as low as 5 cents per minute," writes ZDNet's Matthew Miller.
"The application also provides a combined Truphone and IM contact list that shows the online status and presence of all contacts, including those on AIM, Google Talk and MSN," writes TWICE's Joseph Palenchar.
"Analysts estimate that Apple pre-sold more than 150,000 iPads on its first day, with 2010 sales on track to hit 4 million," says Truphone CEO Geraldine Wilson. "Every device includes Wi-Fi, and soon, 3G connectivity — that makes them a natural fit for Truphone."
