TruPhone Launches New Release, Support For Non-US/UK Mobiles

truphpone.png

Truphone has been busy improving their VoIP-based mobile service. Three new items of note from the folks who connect people over their mobile handsets using VoIP and also make cheese on a dairy farm:

  • The new 3.2 release of their Truphone software for specific Nokia S60 3rd Edition handsets, promising support for VoIP over 3G networks, SMS, easier installation, better access point management and multiple SIM support for travelers.
  • A new service called Truphone Out+, which allows you to use your non-US/UK mobile number with the service. Specifically, calls made thru Truphone will show your proper mobile number as the Caller ID. More on this service after the jump.
  • Truphone InTones, which give your inbound callers a custom Ringback tone when they call you. The tones are shown in the following YouTube video:

I wish the Truphone Out+ service existed here in the US as I could use another mobile number like I could use a hole in the head. That being said, it's all good stuff. Can't wait to see what these Truphone guys come up with next.

Truphone Takes Steps Towards Global Service

Introduces carrier pre-select to mobile communications

Truphone has announced Truphone Out+, a new feature that enables free and VoIP-priced calls to be made that present  a customer's existing mobile phone number. Truphone Out+ also makes it possible for customers to pre-select Truphone as their default carrier, ensuring that free Truphone-to-Truphone calls are placed whenever possible.

Core facts

   1. Truphone Out+ is accessible to new customers from countries where Truphone does not yet provide local mobile numbers. Currently this means countries outside of the UK and USA.

   2. For these new customers Truphone Out+ means that a customer's existing phone number is now displayed as their 'caller identification' (Caller ID) when they make a Truphone call.

   3. The selection of Truphone as the default carrier is achieved transparently: when a Truphone call is made the Truphone servers automatically recognize if the telephone number being called is already linked to a Truphone account. If the destination user is online, then a free Truphone-to-Truphone call is set up.

   4. Truphone is a mobile operator for the Internet age, delivering a UK-based service accessible from around the world. Truphone Out+ is the next evolution of the Truphone service. It will be evolved to a full Truphone service as and when one or more of the following conditions are met:

      – Number portability becomes possible in a country;

      – E.164 compliance is implemented in that country;

      – Truphone introduces a local number range in that country.

      Truphone is actively working with national regulators and operator partners around the world to bring about one or more of these three conditions.

   5. A customer can choose to make any call over GSM rather than via Truphone, if they prefer to do so.

   6. Truphone Out+ is not yet available for existing Truphone customers.

   7. All existing Truphone customers can continue to make free and low-cost mobile VoIP calls over Wi-Fi and the Internet. Truphone-to-Truphone calls are always free.

Quotes

James Tagg, Truphone's chief executive officer, said:

    * "Truphone Out+ will encourage access to the Truphone service from countries where we have not yet introduced local number ranges. At a stroke we have massively increased the number of people who can access and benefit from the Truphone service."
