The potential to use VoIP communication tools for telecommuting has long been an attractive aspect of this technology. The advantages to VoIP telecommuting are legion including: increased mobility, increased communication flexibility and what I term integrated communication. When you communicate with co-workers through VoIP calls, you can integrate video and share documents more seamlessly than you can with traditional phones. You could have Skype open in one window and have a shared Google Doc file open in another window. For the business traveller, VoIP telecommuting holds another advantage: simple billing and no need to figure out the complexities of international cell phone zones and frequencies.
Beyond the above advantages of VoIP telecommuting, there's another reason to telecommute; preserving the environment. Unless you walk or cycle to work, commuting creates pollution and environmental damage. Last month's Earth Day gave rise to some interesting ideas on how technology like VoIP can help with environmental problems.
