VoIP Journey Moves Further With UMA

A new chapter was written in the field of communication at the CTIA Wireless 2006 conference when Wojtek Felendzer talking on his cell phone walked across the room and the call switched behind the scenes from a Wi-Fi wireless hotspot to the regular cellular network.
VoIP technology has taken a significant step in the field of communication. Manufacturers and mobile carriers are planning to link standard cellular networks to Wi-Fi hotspots, an intelligent move which is going to expand the coverage and make cheaper mobile minutes a reality.
Now you all must be wondering how it would be possible. This would be possible by a technology named Unlicensed Mobile Access or UMA which would help those with high speed Wi-Fi router to overcome any poor coverage in their houses or apartments.
This technology would not only prove beneficial to the customers but also save costs for the mobile carriers in the form of new infrastructure. It would also enable troubled handset users to wirelessly download content at broadband speeds at home and take it with them.
Companies such as Cingular Wireless are skeptical that offering Wi-Fi calls inside homes would hurt their parent companies' landline businesses but this technology would be helping traditional landline phone companies retain their customers who are using VoIP phones.
