VoIP industry has been hit by a scam. A Miami businessman in connivance with a professional hacker penetrated the networks of internet phone providers in order to connect thousands of free calls. The man behind this, Edwin Andres Pena after getting free access to the networks charged the customers more than one million dollars for routing calls for them.
$20,000 was paid to hacker Robert Moore. Around fifteen internet phone companies were victimized and one of them even suffered around $300,000 in lost fees. Around 500,000 calls were routed through a network based provider identified in the complaint as N.T.P which appears to be Net2Phone. Free routes were created by hacking into the computer networks of unwitting internet phone providers and this was made possible after the hacker located vulnerable computer ports at unsuspecting non-phone companies around the world. The networks were then programmed to accept internet phone traffic.
This scam has certainly unearthed the vulnerability of internet phone networks.
