VoipBuster Experience

logo_voipbuster.gifpic

As I posted earlier, it's quite possible to configure VoipBuster with your VoIP-enabled Nokia handset. I recently participated with one of my online buddies in a test call with voipbuster from a Nokia E65.

I received the call while on my mobile phone roaming in Canada. The sound quality was more than acceptable in that circumstance. There were some cutouts, but it was not clear if they were caused by WiFi, VoipBuster, or my mobile phone network.

What can I say, it works. No Caller ID, which is kind of a showstopper for me, but hey, what do you expect for free? If you've tried this combination, leave your thoughts in the comments.

I think you’re being generous in calling VoipBuster “Free”. If I understand correctly, the way it works is you have to put $10 EUR (about $15 US) and that qualifies you for a maximum of 300 minutes of “free” calls per week (each call limited to one hour) to specific locations for a few months. Then you have to “top up” (put in another $15) to make more “free” calls.

When I do that math, it sounds more like I’m paying $60 per year for a limited amount of “free” calls.

Wikipedia says “company continuously increases its prices in some hidden ways. It changes terms constantly without notice” and “Latest feature seems that the 10 euros you pay to get ‘free nations’ can no longer be used as credit, you lose the money after 90 days. Any non-free destinations need a separate 10 euro credit.”

    In short, caveat emptor.

These are excellent points. The company behind VoipBuster and others has done some pretty squirrelly things with regards to Terms of Service, particularly on their “free” service.

Personally, I stick with services like Skype or Gizmo Project where the per-minute charges are obvious.
