magicJack – enjoy cheap VoIP calls with it

magicJack - enjoy cheap VoIP calls with it

Here is magicJack for you – a new VoIP service which eliminates the phone charges. magicjack has been invented by Dan Borislow who has an experience of over twenty years in the telecom field. With it you can make cheap phone calls from your computer with the aid of a USB device which connects on one end to the computer and the other end on to the your analog phone. It's quit easy to set it up and it will take just a minute to get started. You will be able to get this done in three simple steps:

1. Plug any phone cord into the magicJack¢
2. Plug magicjack¢ into a USB port on your computer. You may use a USB extension cord (such as the one provided) if desired.
3. Wait 60 seconds for completion screen to appear, then dial your phone and talk for free.

It offers some premium features such as Free Follow Me so you won't ever miss a call plus you can make free local and long distance calls within U.S. and in case you are traveling you can take your magicJack along and call U.S. for free from there. That sounds really cool!! Since its in beta therefore expect it to be available by April 2007. It is priced between $29.95 and $39.95 and has a yearly license fee of $19.95 for unlimited calls in U.S., Canada and some parts of Europe.

Thnx Tom

This is very interesting! I am wondering if a service plan with the telephone company or DSL connection is required for this to work? How is the bundled software? And what’s the sound quality for long distance nationwide calls?

It is very similar device I saw it, I use google to search, someone call flashphone and come from mplat.com , and almost two years before.

I guess, MagicJack don’t have core technology.

This product is still beta (as of 1/04/08). ALOT of areas DO NOT have local area codes, so calling out for pizza from another state phone number is not going to go over well. This product may *seem* fabulous…its not. You get third party tracking of your activity in return for low pricing….Until its improved and meets the demands of the customers needs, it should stay in planning stage and not out on the market.

  6. davidows | January 13, 2008 at 12:29 pm | Permalink

Tayla, For over a month now, a LOT of Area Codes ARE available and there will be more. What VOIP company do you work for, that you feel so threatened by the magicJack? Your “third-party tracking” claim is baseless, unless you refer to the NSA, which tracks ALL phone calls, whether from a magicJack, another VOIP, a cellular or a POTS line. BTW, you should have said an “extremely” low price. Try comparing $19.95 per YEAR with most other VOIP plans, costing more than that per MONTH!

  7. Dave | January 13, 2008 at 12:38 pm | Permalink

Marcus, you have already posted the same comment everywhere else, and you usually post it twice, why? What you’re suggesting wouldn’t be so “magic”. It’s already done by everybody else in the VOIP business! The bigger difference is that the others charge at least 12 times MORE, and usually 15 or 20 times MORE, per year than magicJack for the same service. So, I ask the same question I asked Tayla – what’s your agenda? I have no agenda other than that of a very satisfied user of magicJack ever since it became available and publicized on CNBC. I just bought a second one and I’ll probably be giving out at least a couple dozen, as gifts, in the near future.

I have had my MagicJack since yesterday afternoon (4-4-08). It is the best thing since sliced bread! It was the easiest thing to install and within 5 minutes I was making phone calls. The live help is the best and they walked me through setting up my voice mail (which was the only thing I had slight problems with) The clarity of the calls is outstanding. We don’t have local area code for my area (which is remote area in Kentucky) but since we have caller ID and also a box that pops up on your desktop when you get calls if someone local calls me, I tell them to let it ring a couple of times and when thier number and name pops up on the caller ID I just call them right back. I will NEVER again pay the high price for long distance or phone service. I researched this MagicJack for over a month before I decided to purchase, and I got it within 2 days of doing so. If you read all of the FAQ’s you will find out anything and everything you need to know about it. I recommend it to anyone that has to make any kind of long distance calls regularly, and even just for the local calls it is worth not paying a monthly bill. My total price was right under $50 and that included shipping and handling and a $2.95 priority shipping fee that enabled me to get my MagicJack within 2 days. I want to thank the inventor of this gadget…has to be a genius. Anyone that would like to ask me any additional questions about this is welcome to email me at kutedymples at highland.net. If I can answer any questions you may have I will surely try. Like I said…I highly recommend this to anyone that wants a phone and has high speed internet. I have DSL and it works perfectly, my internet speed is not affected at all even when making or recieving a phone call.
    Happy and completely satisfied customer!

I have used magicJack about 28days and the voicemail aspect has a lot to be desired. The standard recorded receiver’s message takes 14 dial tones to activate the voicemail. Most of my callers Hang Up. Maybe something to work on improving.

I just received one in the mail, and yes I could not get my area code but I did see where they are adding more near me and I hope they will keep until they get to the 540 area code, I have tested this MagicJack over DSL, Cable and via a Sprint Cell Network, to others arount the US and I have found that with it’s limitations I had 90% clear voice over the phone, when I called to FL to a cell number I had a delay but we could talk with few problems. From my laptop connected to the internet via my cell phone the magicjack did work poorly but that connection is far below the standard requierments.
You may not get your area code right now and they do offer that you can change your number one time for free so when they do open to your area code you can change. Final note, THE PRICE THE PRICE THE PRICE. First YEAR for me will be $50 due to I requested express shipping. For the YEAR, then just $19.95 PER YEAR. ok I have looked into Skype I used it when they had it for FREE before they charged for the service. This MagicJack is better you can use your PC or plug in your cordless phone and in less than 5 min you will be making calls from your phone to anywhere in the US.

I have had my magicjack for a week now and I like it for the price, but the options are not the greatest ex: I don’t like having my computer on all the time, I had to power it to standbye to save cost on power bill, and slowed my computer down by doing this. If there was only a better way for it to work without power to computer. I would also like to turn off my voicemail from magicjack and be able to use my phone machine instead for my wife, she hates technology and me sometimes for doing things like this to her. It is cheap so I guess you can’t have everything.

  16. Attila | April 22, 2008 at 9:33 pm | Permalink

MagicJack works well in the US but not for Canada, still needs some work since my calls connect 60% of the times over there; It just rings & the person i’m calling does not even hear their phone ringing 2 times out of 4. You have to wait a few hours or next day to try again in order to reach that person in Canada. Besides calling Canada no complains… Great Gadget.

I just received my Majic Jack in the mail today and I’m already seeing possibilities with this, I’m ordering another for my best friend over in the Netherlands, forget SKYPE, I used it while it was free. But this little thing right here, well lets just say, we’re going to see a LOT of jobs go under. Sorry to those that are going to be in the cross fire, but I’m so grateful that this has happened. I’m so tired of the monopoly of BIG companies making a killing on the little people. My Annual phone bill is 600 bux a year. But with Majic Jack its’ only 20, hell you do the math. I just wish he come out with something regarding these edison and gas bills, they’ve been getting away so long with robbing and raping us John Q. Citizens, til I’ll be happy when someone comes and undercut them also. I say all of this, because I pay the phone company in one year what I get in my monthly disability check. So HOORAY for DAN, and to all of you negative folks, stop it please with your patronizing comments. Did you honestly think that people would really pay any attention to you, when we’re/I’m saving 580 bux a month? Get over it and yourself. Magic Jack is HERE, not in the future. It’s here NOW… can’t wait to see the next big breakthrough.

Amazing how many users are willing to accept adware programs, especially when they have to PAY for those programs. Read their terms of service policy, section 11, Advertisements. Their magicPage software that must run on your host is adware. Oh joy, you get to pay for spam.

Magic jack is definitely a money saver…I guess you get what you pay for. I don’t like to have my computer on all the time and the reception is very choppy at times. I’d give it 6 out of ten.

  21. Geri | May 20, 2008 at 1:42 am | Permalink

Ok, I seen this thing, and I read all these comments. Well I think I would LOVE to try this, since I currently pay 160 a month to the phone comp. which I thought was damn good, BUT that’s for my dish, internet, and phone.
SO here’s the question, my deal is for a package, what internet does everyone have that they are able to turn off the phone company? or how are you able to only have dsl which is what I have without the phone company? because my phone company doesn’t allow us to separate it.
And I would really not want to go to Time Warner, they are more expensive than what I already have.

I just received my magic jack but I am having so many difficulties installing it. I was able to install in MAC and register and make a call, but I do not hear a dial tone. I was using a headset and it seems for MAC, you can only use a handset. I still have to verify that. As for PC, I installed, but cannot register and make a call. The technical representative was saying that it has something to do with my internet speed. I’m currently subscribed to USB/aircard. One of the speedtests they made me do turned out okay, but I cannot still use the magicjack. I’ve spent countless hours and sessions with their live chat representatives. Some of them know how to investigate the problem and probable solutions, but some of them made me keep doing the same things and the sessions are super long! I will give this magic jack one last chance. I will try to use another windows based computer, and as for the MAC, I will try also using a handset. Will keep everyone posted!

After I received the MJ, I found out that 1) the Mac version is BETA, and 2) it only works on Intel Macs. This info was NOT on the website when I purchased it, but it is now. It was very difficult to get a return authorization number, but I finally convinced them. I returned it weeks ago, and waited for my credit which did not arrive. So I went to the live chat service touted on their website, and the person (“Sandy”) said that, coincidentally enough, the invoice date of my return was just yesterday, but that I must allow 45 days for it to turn up.
This company is BS. I don’t know if their product works, but if it doesn’t, you probably can kiss your money away. Their customer service is so syntactically challenged it MUST be based somewhere that English is a second language, at best. Take my advice, go SKYPE!

WARNING!!!!!!!! if you’re planning to save some pennies and get into a lot of technical problems with your XP or VISTA OS, THINK IT TWICE BEFORE U PLUG IT IN!!!!!!!!
Tech support is only thru chat… had to get into it several times and I never got a person that was qualified on gaving REAL TECH SUPPORT!!

BE AWARE!!!!!!! that if you have Media Center on your computer… you will lost it completly on XP sp1 sp2 (the media files will be corrupted and u won’t be able to get thru the welcome screen), on Vista u’ll have some issues too but not as bad as on XP (if u have Media Center or other program to watch live tv thru a tv tuner card u won’t be able to make the call)…

I had the Magic Jack for like 20 days… to do many tests before I consider to return it.

Wish this could save u from having a lot of headaches… if ur having MEDIA CENTER ONLY!

Phone calls are very clear if your having a DSL connection from 1.5Mbps (Without a router) and up (with a router)…

I bought a MagicJack several months ago-it caused my computer to crash, cost my phone service and lost contact, refused to stay on the computer and took me a long time to get resolved. I finally received a grudging consent to send me a replacement at no cost if I returned the old jack. I got the email 11/10/08 that the replacement was being shipped, got a return lable for the old jack and an email stating I had two weeks to return the old jack before being charged. I noticed 39.95 has been taken from my account and when I tried to contact someone to help me with this, I was told I had better return the jack if I wanted my money back, there was no one to complain to and they could take whatever they wanted. This is not a company I will deal with again. Not only do they sell defective proucts, they go way out to be sure they don’t lose any of the money they have gotten.

Some of these people must work for some telephone company. I have magicjack on both an XP computer and a Vista computer for over 5 months now and have had just one slight problem which was an echo that required me to just lower the Volume and it was fixed. Magicjack does work and I wouldn’t give mine up. I think most people who have problems with it just can’t read simple instructions.

“Most users that are having “trouble” with their magicJack® dongel are usually having connection problems with their computer’s USB ports and its power supply to those ports!”

This is the best telephone service that I have EVER used!

This service ONLY costs $19.95 per year!

Don’t believe any of the BAD PRESS you may hear about the service. I discovered what the “technical” problem was, because it actually happened to me. I was having audio and connection problems until I solved the technical problem of my computer’s USB bus drawing over 500 mA, actually 580 mA, with everything plugged into the bus.

My eMachine computer, Model T2882, only has a 250 Watt power supply and that was working at its limits with all the USB devices that I had plugged into the machine were demanding current. The attached article is how I solved the problem for less than $20.00!

    magicJack® Set Up
How many USB devices are currently plugged in?
    Power-Hungry USB Ports
The number of USB devices that the users can plug into the computer these days, with cameras, scanners, printers, keyboards, pointing devices, PDAs, hard disks and many more peripherals using the USB interface that often runs off the computer’s power through the USB bus. This is more of a convenience since the users don’t have to plug in a separate electrical cord, but it’s also easy to overload the USB ports if the users plug a number of devices into many of the available ports.

Does the user’s PC’s USB ports supply enough electricity to power all the devices they have attached to them? Plugging too much gear into a bus-powered USB hub (one with no external power adapter) can overwhelm a USB port by demanding more than the 500 mA it can supply. Check the power demands on any USB port in Windows XP by right-clicking My Computer and choosing Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers, double-click the USB Root Hub entry, choose the Power tab, and add up the amounts in the “Power Required” column.
(Below is the advice which many users forget about.)
In a few rare instances, the USB port on the user’s computer may not have enough electrical power for the magicJack® dongel to work properly.
Try using a externally AC powered USB hub to plug the magicJack® dongel into instead of using the computer’s USB port if there are ‘many’ other USB devices connected to the computer or if the magicJack® dongel acts erratically with audio and connection problems. »(Cost $20.00)
Remember: magicJack® may work best when plugged directly into a USB port on the computer.
Do not plug the magicJack® dongel into a multi port USB hub that is not AC powered.
After the user has connected the magicJack® dongel for the first time, registered the device, and has the ‘softphone’ on the screen, the user should probably run TCP Optimizer to “tune” the computer to work with it in an efficient manner; it can be downloaded from the following website:

    http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

The program can aid both the novice and the advanced user in tweaking related TCP/IP parameters in the Windows Registry, making it easy to tune your system to the type of Internet connection used. The tool uses advanced algorithms, and the bandwidth delay product to find the best TCP Window for your specific connection speed. It provides for easy tuning of all related TCP/IP parameters, such as MTU, RWIN, and even advanced ones like QoS and ToS/Diffserv prioritization. The program works with all current versions of Windows, and includes additional tools, such as testing average latency over multiple hosts, and finding the largest possible packet size (MTU).

The user can use the TCP Optimizer by following these short instructions:

    1. Choose the maximum Connection Speed from the slider bar (the maximum available bandwidth, in kilobits per second)
    2. Choose the Network Interface, or check to Modify All Network Adapters
    3. Pick “Optimal settings” from the radio-buttons near the bottom of the program
    4. Click on the “Apply changes” button and reboot

    magicJack® Uses

    1. Inexpensive Secondary Telephone Service »[Costing $19.95 per year or 5¢ per day]
    2. Excellent adjunct to expensive prime time and/or poor indoor Cellular Telephone Service
    3. Distribute magicJack® phone number to all contacts as primary contact number
    4. When outdoors have the magicJack® phone number forwarded to cell phone
    5. When indoors use magickJack® phone number to reach and be reached by contacts

I tried the MJ solution, and no dont need to have a phone company unless your ISP fails, then it effects many things and 911 calls, but for me the jack installed fine but the use was very choppy from the start, like if you said “hello” you would get H lo, i personally think its my ISP but they sure were no help, I use COX but not found another person in my area that has used MJ to let me know if they had the same problem (topeka, kansas)

Its very nice to such products but their are some companies offering cheap international calls. They are providing a access number, user can easily from their own land line OR mobile phone.

Ive had Magicjack for over 1 month now and I love it!!! Worked exactly as described, and was a instant money saver for me. I tell everybody about this amazing product. I just hope the government doesn’t decide to tax it like my other phone company bill was taxed. Great product! I tell everyone to buy it,hook it up, and use it for every penny its worth!! (and in my opinion it’s worth big bucks)

Hello markus. you cant connect a magic jack to a router. routers wont run the software and dont have usb ports. it has to plug into a computer.

I already got a voip provider in Onesuite.com but MJ pricing is hard to resist so I decided to try it. Well, it worked but it takes 2 to 3 dial before I can get a connection. I guess I\’m back using my Onesuite and just use MagicJack as a back up of sort.

Started with free trial and then purchashed. Have used MagicJack for two months with zero problems. We have an Intel iMac which I thought was making a difference. Had good “chat” with intelligent MagicJack CS – Zack who claims that MJ fine with PC’s. Am dumping Verizon! Was very sceptical to begin with, but with trial gained confidence. It feels great to be making nearly free phone calls!

MagicJack has worked OK for us. On our laptop, the firewall needed to be down for us to hear anything…weird. It’s great for the money considering we were paying $50 just for local calls through Verizon landline. We get some echoing, some static…recalling seems to solve the issue. I bought the MJ international minutes to call a friend in England, and it works fine.

To All none believers.I bought magic jack after seeing it advertise on tv.
I’ve had mine now for over three years
now. No problems with connections or anything. I use it for my website to make business transaction as well as personal calls to stay in contact with family and friends. This is one of the best product since the phone was invented.I have recommend many customers to this product and no one has complain about this as of yet.Now don’t get me wrong there is no such thing as a perfect product. But this product is well worth the money for the price and the accessory.

I read the comments posted by Markus Goebel’s Tech News and am astounded that this person does not know how to put a computer into either sleep or hibernate mode. Now, that person or company (Goebel’s Tech News) I would not rely on to put on my slippers. To have the name that precedes it with Tech News. Wow, how do you sleep at night knowing that your the scammer and not Magic Jack. BTW I have no affiliation with the company only with the passion to see intelligence out there.

Responding to Marcus, Thats odd that you have to boot your puter to make a call I don’t have to?? I do agree that they should of made it to plug into the cable or DSL plug instead of plugging into the USB then plugging fone in there. Good point and good luck.

I, personally, have not had a good experience with magic jack. I have spent over 20 hours on the chat with the techs to get it to work and it still has issues. I have finally given up and am returning it to them.

The other problem that I have had, is that there is literally no way to leave feedback to the powers that be in the compnay. The only communication is by chat and you can not get to a live person for any reason. Some of the techs seem to know something of what they are doing, but the majority did not.

Good luck, if you try it. The concept is great. Just not the service nor the customer support.

  76. naaz | August 27, 2010 at 1:48 pm | Permalink

I WOULD HIGHLY SUGGEST PEOPLE NOT TO BUT THIS PRODUCT. THEY HAVE REALLY BAD SERVICE AND THEY HAVE NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT. IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG THEY EITHER BLAME YOU OR TELL YOU THAT THEIR SYSTEM IS GENERATED LIKE THAT AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. ALL THEIR ADVERTISEMENTS AND COMMERCIALS TELL US THAT THEY ARE UNLIMITED BUT APPARENTLY THEY ARE NOT UNLIMITED. IF YOU USE IT MORE THAN THEY WANT YOU TO USE THEY WILL JUST SUSPEND YOUR ACCOUNT AND TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE A EXCESSIVE USER AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU EXPLAIN THEM THEY WILL NOT REACTIVATE YOUR ACCOUNT. THEY ARE JUST BIG TIME SCAMMERS AND THIEVES.

I am in my 2nd year. First year I wasn’t so sure but they have done wonders to improve. One ‘wonder’ causes us to lose our contact list so making a paper one was one of those shoulda. After the 2nd oops by them now I do have a manual copy. Over all I am more than satisfied being on SS no more paying $65 a month to ‘verizon, now Frontier. I am hoping for my 3rd year to take advantage of the 5 year plan at $66. That saves me $5 so why not. Mch better than skype as I have been informed the ‘free’ part is if you talk with another skype user. A non skype user or talking internationally cost a lot more than MJ. Give it a chance, you won’t be sorry. Unless you have a power outage that is but that is why everyone should have a cell phone or its equivelant right? Right.
