Skype Pro Now Available in US/Canada

products_skypepro.png

I got an email from the Skype PR folks on Tuesday letting me know that Skype has finally made it possible to get Skype Pro in the US. When you consider what you get for $3 USD a month, it's a little more costly than their now discontinued unlimited calling plan, which was $29.95 a year, but it's a better overall value.

For 2 Euros/3 USD a month, you get unlimited calling when you are within one of 29 countries, though a small per-call connection fee applies. Within the US/Canada, you get unlimited calls to the US/Canada without a connection fee. You also now get voicemail, a Skype-To-Go number-a way to make cheap calls from your mobile phones, and 60% off SkypeIn numbers.

My unlimited calling was going to expire at the end of next month, but I went ahead and signed up for Skype Pro anyway. They simply deducted the $3 out of my existing Skype balance and that was that. Now I've got Skype Voicemail again and I am considering getting a SkypeIn number, which only costs $24 a year as a SkypePro subscriber.

Are you going to upgrade to Skype Pro now that it's available in the US and Canada? If you've had it for a while, do you think it's a good value? What do you think?

what about MagicJack? is not that a better option for US calls? 40$ per month including the number ?

MagicJack is $40 for the first year and $20 for each additional year. The only problem I have with the MagicJack is that you’re tethered to your phone. Skype runs on a wide variety of computers and devices, whereas the MagicJack is likely a Windows-only affair.

I’m in Canada so it is not much use for me, no skype in available with Canadian area codes, no skype to go access numbers. I think I’m better off on pay as you go right now…

You have to run the numbers to see whether $3/mo is a good deal for you. Versus what I know my mobile phone is going to cost to make those same calls, it’s a good deal. It’s also a good deal versus per-minute charges of Skype. May not work out that way for you.

BEWARE SKYPE PRO it’s bull.. My daughter went over what they call the fair usage policy, which you really have no idea how many minutes they are talking about because they don’t tell you exactly how many minutes they consider fair and after 3 weeks of calling her friends skpe stated to charge me for these calls. SKPE RPO IS NOT UNLIMITED AT ALL.. BEWARE. Customer support has not returned any of my emails in a week, I am in my second month now and they are still charging me, so it’s not even a penalty just for that one month. the policy says they have a right to revoke your skppro privileges at any time the feel you are making too many calls, that they don’t tell you what that is. So if you get the six months or a year plan,, guess what? it can be taken away from you in just a week or two depending how many teenagers you have in the house and you would have paid a year for nothing. Go to skype and read their fair usage policy.

    Peter,

the fair use policy of 3000 minutes is clearly stated. it is true that the old program had no FUP making it better deal for very heavy users. your daughter must be a very big talker. i do not imagine that very many individuals need more than 3000 minutes per month; bussiness’ could be a different story.

i do have to say though that i am a strong believer that we do need consumer protection laws that forbid the advertisement of unlimited voice or data with a FUP. unlimited should be unlimited. the current skype pro plan should be a 3000 minute a month plan.

I didn’t realize the “unlimited” calling was limited to 3,000 minutes. My bad, but at least the limit is clear. I personally don’t use anywhere near 3,000 minutes of calls to the PSTN. It’d be nice to be able to keep track.

I am anson2422 and requested “SKYPE PRO” as soon as I saw it. I love SKYPE and will be your customer as long as possible. (I am 76 years old and with some luck I’ll hang on a long time. The only thing however is that I have not downloaded it) Please tell me where I might find the download.
Thanks for your fine Skype. ===ART===

Yeah, Gautam, you can blame the Canadian regulatory agencies for that.
