Valleywag Thinks Ooma Is On It’s Way Out

ooma_logo_lg.jpg

I don't normally read Valleywag, the National Enquirer of the tech industry, but Pat Phelan gets credit for tweeting about this story that suggests that Ooma may be on it's way out.

Ooma is a company that sells you a piece of hardware that gives you free nationwide calling in a way that might be committing toll fraud. I panned it the first time I heard about it and I still think it's a horrible idea.

Of course, this came from Valleywag and I couldn't find a second source for this story, so this may be completely offbase. If you can confirm any of the details in the Valleywag story, I'd love to hear it!

Well and anyway, even if they’re just providing their service – it has got the same problem as Skype, MSN, Yahoo IM, GoogleTalk do – they’re using their own protocol and no way you can use this piece of hardware with any other supplier. Which is totally correct from business point of view, but makes it just a piece of rubbish from a technological.

It’s the same reason I hate purchasing VoIP gear (or mobile phones) tied to a specific service provider. It makes them bricks when you decide to terminate service (or they go under). LAME!

Since its initial announcement, I’ve been writing about the technical and security problems of Ooma. It’s no wonder it’s failing. It was a really stupid idea from the beginning. Guess enough people figured that out. Wonder how many actual boxes were sold. Guess we’ll have to count the screams when the service actually shuts down.

Glad you put ooma-revealed.info back on the air. Now more than ever.
